BIG SKY Tour
SIX DAY TOUR
On & Off Road - Low Ratio Vehicle Required - A bit more challenging.
Our new 6 day tour for 2018. Big Sky will be NZ Adventures first 6 day tour outside the ever popular High Country Heritage. A slightly harder more off road orientated trip Big Sky is designed to incorporate many of the scenic and pastoral highlights of South Canterbury / Central Otago region in one fantastic tour.
Brief trip overview. The tour will meet in Geraldine for a welcome and safety briefing on the evening prior to departure.
Day One. We venture into the big sheep station hill country west of Geraldine. After lunch in Fairlie the trip will go into the Mackenzie Basin and the Hakataramea Valley before driving to our overnight in Omarama.
Day Two. From Omarama we drive south east into the Hawkdun and St Mary's ranges on the boundary of Canterbury and Otago. Rough high tracks offer expansive views in all directions from some of New Zealand's highest goldfields while the
tracks occasionally drop down into river gorges crossing deeply dissected alpine plateaus. Overnight is in Alexandra
Day Three. We head up into the Old Man Range and head along the highest landform in the south of the island. We visit old goldmining areas and again enjoy spectacular views down into Southland and West Otago. Lunch is again on a large sheep and cattle property near Roxburgh. In the afternoon we again enjoy rough tracks in West Otago before returning to Alexandra for our overnight.
Day Four. Our route takes us out of the Alexandra Basin using an old wagon track. We carry on along some of New Zealands highest tracks overlooking Cromwell before taking the highway to Arrowtown and spending the afternoon travelling up to and back from historic Macetown. We eventually arrive at our overnight at the Cardrona Hotel.
Day Five. On this morning we travel up through the Snow Farm onto the Pisa Range driving down the steep eastern slopes to a station lunch near Tarras. Our afternoon is spent driving along the beautiful Lindis Range with views of the upper Clutha River valley and back into the Lindis Pass along the way. Our overnight is in Cromwell.
Day Six. Our final morning takes our tour over the Dunstan Mountain Range on a new track. Lunch is at the historic Vulcan Hotel in St Bathans. Our afternoon route takes us over the Omarama Saddle track west branch or the rougher wetter of the saddle options in that area. Our tour finishes with an overnight in Twizel.
